Hinter rFactor stecken die Entwickler von ISI, die Programmierer von F1 Challenge und der GTR Physik Engine. Eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit zu Live for Speed ist nicht abzustreiten, trotzdem offenbaren sich Unterschiede: So kann das Spiel wesentlich leichter modifiziert werden, vor allem in Bezug auf Wagen und Strecken.
Ein Freischaltkey kann um 35 Euro auf der Website gekauft werden.
